Scoliosis

Scoliosis Treatment & Exercise You Should Try

Scoliosis, a Greek word that means crooked basically refers to a medical condition of the spine curvature to the left or to the right.

This condition is more common in women than in men.

Rather than a straight line, the spine looks more like S (double curve) and C shape (single curve).

In severe cases, pronounced curves will bring a possibility of health complications including deterioration of cardiovascular function.

Keep on reading to find out what scoliosis treatment and exercise can be made.

Symptoms of Scoliosis

Scoliosis

Scoliosis symptoms can be seen when standing straight or leaning forward.

It gets more noticeable as the individual grows older or as the curve worsens.

Therefore,we will share scoliosis symptoms that you need to be aware of:

  • Uneven shoulders level, waistline, or hips
  • The one-shoulder blade protrudes more than the other side
  • Rib hump due to deformed ribs
  • Imbalanced musculature

Causes of Scoliosis

As many as 80% of the causes of scoliosis are known as “idiopathic” which is an unknown cause.

There are two types of curves namely “structural” and “non-structural” which are scoliosis whose cause is known.

However, doctors may identify common causes that lead to scoliosis among the patients are:

  • Cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy refers to a group of nervous system disorders that can affect an individual’s daily activities. These activities include movement, thinking, hearing, and learning.

  • Muscular dystrophy.

Muscular dystrophy can be understood as a condition that may damage and weaken our body muscles. It happens due to a lack of a protein which is known as dystrophin.

Dystrophin mainly to maintain good and balanced muscle function. Therefore, it is very necessary to avoid any inconvenience to our body system.

People who are lacking this protein may encounter problems with walking, swallowing, and muscle conditions.

  • Scoliosis also happens due to defect births among infants. It may affect their spinal bones which are called spina bifida.
  • Individuals who have experienced spinal injuries or infections.

Scoliosis Treatment and Exercises To Consider

  • Wear brace

scoliosis

A tailored back brace is recommended to preserve a correct body posture.

It is also an alternative that can reduce pain by providing support to your spine.

  • Surgery

scoliosis

For those with Cobb’s angle more than 45 degrees, surgery will likely be recommended.

Other than that, surgery can be considered if:

  • The indentation in your spine is severe or getting worse
  • Experience severe back pain and other treatments do not help
  • Feel the pressure on the nerves in the spine

Here are several surgical techniques for treating scoliosis:

  1. Laminectomy. A part of the patient’s spine is removed to relieve pressure on the nerves.
  2. Discectomy. A portion of the disc between the spine is removed to relieve pressure on the nerve.
  3. Spinal Fusion. Two or more spines are joined together to stabilize, strengthen and straighten the spine.
  • Exercises

scoliosis

Doing exercises is not only applicable for those people who want to lose weight. They are useful when it comes to human’s body coordination and functions.

Here is our suggestions of exercises that you can try to reduce the scoliosis pain:

  • Pelvic tilts

This exercise is not an alienation, especially to those who are experiencing incontinence.

Nevertheless, this exercise is helpful to stretch your tight muscles in the hips and lower back. Plus, you don’t need sports equipment at all!

All you have to do is lie on the floor and bend your knees. Next, you have to flatten your back and push your lower body part slightly upward.

  • Latissimus dorsi stretch

scoliosis

Did you know that latissimus dorsi is the largest body muscle in our upper body?

Hence, to do this stretch exercise, you have to stand in a good posture (basically, stand straight).

Place both of your hands over your head and grab your left wrist with your right hand. Then, bend slightly to the left until you feel a stretch sensation on your right side of your body.

Do this stretch on both sides for at least 5-10 repetition on each side.

  • Bird-dog

scoliosis

Bird-dog is actually a yoga-inspired exercise. Like the other 2 exercise suggestions above, you don’t need any sport equipment to perform this exercise.

The very least you need is a yoga mat.

To perform this exercise, you need to rely on both hands and bent knees on the floor. Extend your right arm and the opposite leg straight back.

Repeat this step for both sides for 10-15 repetitions.
